Both crowns and most bridges are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist. A crown is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A bridge may be recommended if you're missing one or more teeth.
Crowns more commonly known as caps are covering on the tooth similar to shape & size of normal tooth.
Crowns are indicated in :
- Teeth which are root canal treated.
- Teeth broken due to injury.
- Highly discolored teeth due to fluorosis, any systemic problem,or due to external factors like excessive pan chewing.
- Correction of shape and size of natural teeth.
These are fixed teeth made using support of adjoining teeth and are cemented on to these teeth permanently. Bridges can be usedto replace small no. of missing teeth/tooth provided adjoining teeth have sufficient strength(bone support).
Types of material used for crowns and bridges can be:
Nickel Chromium Alloy is used and is steel colored in appearance.
Pure Gold can also be used as a metal for crown.
Porcelin With Metal (PFM)
These are tooth coloured crowns made up of Porcelin(Ceramic) with underlying base of metal.
These are ceramic crown without any metal base underlying so are more aesthetic and natural like.
